Copeland Conservative Association has welcomed the Government announcement that its targets to boost flood defences have been exceeded.

Defra confirmed today (Tuesday) that its £2.6 billion, six-year programme of work dedicated to improving flood and coastal defences has exceeded its original target, with over 314,000 homes now better protected from flooding since 2015; an increase of 14,000 from its original target.

Of the money committed to protecting communities, a total of £17,483,000 has been spent in Copeland on flood-defence schemes including Egremont and Keswick.

Andy Pratt, Chair of Copeland Conservative Association, said: "Flooding ruins lives, and its impact has been felt on Copeland's homes, businesses and communities for generations.

"It is extremely welcome that the Government has surpassed its targets in terms of number of homes protected, and our communities are now benefiting directly from this investment. There is more work to do however, and with a strong Conservative voice on the new Cumberland Council, we can continue to fight for the best interests of our communities."
