In May 2023, the structure of local government in Cumbria will undergo a significant change.
The two-tier structure - of a county council and six districts - will be replaced by a unitary structure, of one council carrying out all the services in our area.
The West of Cumbria (the areas of Copeland, Allerdale and Carlisle) will be governed by a new Cumberland Council that will launch in May 2023.
On May 5, 2022, elections will be held to 46 elect councillors to Cumberland Council. These councillors will form a 'shadow' authority for the next 12-month transition period and will continue in their roles for a further four-year term when the new council takes control in 2023.
